I have nothing against Miss Hudson. I believe she is a talented woman who has made a name for herself BUT i have to admit, when i heared that she was appointed to play Winnie Mandela, i though: “WHAT? Jennifer play Winnie Mandela, why?” that was my immediate thought. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Does she know anything about Winnie? has she ever read up on her? Can she relate to what she went through? Can she REALLY? if that was the case, why wasnt a south african actress like Terry Phetho asked to be one of the dreamgirls? why is it that as south africans we always sell ourselves short? there is ALOT of talent in SA, home grown talent that needs to be put out there. the appointment of Hudson is like saying SA doesnt have talent. its like saying of ALL the exceptional actresses we have in SA, none of them have what it takes to portray Winnie Mandela. I would have had no leg to stand on if there were auditions done and SA actors were given a chance to show what they can do. Miss Hudson should have auditioned for the part aswell and not just be given the role without having to work for it. This is our story, a south african story that should be played by a south african actress who will feel it in her spirit when she picks up her fist to say AMANDLA…i am all for re looking at this. South Africa has got talent, when will that talent ever be discovered if it is constantly being put down?
I understand why South African actors are furious, South Africa has the best actresses of all time, they might not be marketed as often as America but I personally do not support some foreign actress to act as Winnie Mandelo with no knowledge of South African female struggle…Americans will not understand where South Africa comes from, especially a young and new actress like Jenifer Hudson..South Africa is blessed with great actresses like Nthati Moeshesh , Nambitha Mpumlwana who is also Xhosa and can relate to Winnie’s role pretty well.
